Opinion | America’s Global Role Is Challenging—And It’s Getting Tougher

On February 16, 2025, challenges are mounting in the United States in sustaining its role as the leader in the global scenario at a time when international policy decisions and shifts in geopolitical conditions have only exacerbated international engagement.

Changes in Foreign Policy and Defense

In an extraordinary move, the Trump administration has made significant alterations in foreign policy. The order specifically at issue, Executive Order 14169, directed placing all foreign development assistance programs by the U.S. under complete suspension for a total of 90 days: “for a review.” That is having very severe implications for global health, infrastructure, and humanitarian initiatives, traveling all the way from one end to another-waling-just south of the equator. Moving forward, the government will show its reduced commitment to European defense and inform NATO allies that they must increase these budgets for defenses and take their regional security into their own hands. The Europeans, therefore, are reassessing their strategies and the budget allocations in favor of defense.

How the Intelligence Community is Set to Change

Concerns about where U.S. intelligence operations will go now arise in light of Tulsi Gabbard’s appointment as Director of National Intelligence. Her previous statements as well as her recent policy proposals, including buyouts for CIA employees and easing foreign influence monitoring, have created some fear about the United States’ ability to respond to emergent global threats. These actions could also erode the trust of our international allies and endanger joint security efforts.

Worldwide Perception and New Challenges

Such progressive policies have only prompted aggressive nations, especially Russia and China, to extend their pursuance of greater influence. It is the recalibrated U.S. foreign aid programs and defense commitments that have opened power vacuums which lead toward increasing the instabilities of geopolitics. Allied nations have raised concerns on the reliability of U.S. support, leading to reassessing of these international alliances and defense postures.

Conclusion

America faces complicated times in an increasingly complex international landscape, being much less strategic in terms of recent policy shifts that contribute further to greater challenges in the role of global leadership. It requires the development of a strategic end-state because of the changing dynamics on how efficiently the international community can manage traditional and emerging threats in this complex geopolitical environment.
