Zeller Expected to Remain Away from Rockets for the Rest of the Season

Cody Zeller, center for the Houston Rockets, is said to be on leave for the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA Season. League sources leave unclear the particulars surrounding his absence, mentioning that both Zeller and the franchise have mutually tended to this choice.

Zeller and Rockets Come to Terms

The veteran Zeller, who signed with the Rockets for frontcourt help, has been away for personal matters. There were thoughts of a potential return, but latest indications are that he will not be returning for the season. The Rockets have not made a statement about this, but coach Ime Udoka recently spoke about the issue, expressing that the organization supports Zeller in whatever he requires.

Effect on the Rockets’ Rotation

The Rockets will once again turn to younger big men Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr., and Jock Landale to add even more frontcourt depth with the absence of Zeller. Şengün has quickly become a heavy contributor, while Smith and Landale will have to be resigned again to backup roles and then see more minutes.

The Rockets may also look into free agency or trade options to bolster their frontcourt, given the fact that the only other captain they brought with them assumed that injury would be the biggest hindrance in their push for a playoff spot in the West.

What is Zeller’s Next Move?

At 31, Zeller is adjusted enough to be considered a sage with much experience on Hornets, Trail Blazers, Heat, and now Rockets. Whether he is going to return to the NBA next season is yet to be seen, but he is evidently conscious that his decision to take leave for personal business is operative at this time.

The Rockets will push ahead without Zeller since he would not be providing leadership and depth, though the goals of this season remain a priority.
